Portfolio Update (July 2018)

Greetings, new and returning readers! It’s been over a year from when I last posted on this site about my investing journey with POSB Invest Saver. Since then I have taken a more active approach to investing, so nonetheless I give my thanks to all my returning readers who have followed me on my investing journey so far!

With so much volatility observed in the STI Index year-to-date so far, my portfolio has taken quite a beating with several poor entry and exit positions in cyclical industries (like tech). Going forward I will not hesitate to take profits and re-balance my portfolio.

Monthly Expenses and POSB Invest Saver update (March 2017)

Good day, readers! March has been a month of splurging for me as things like my mousepad and earpiece were worn out. Bought a book at my school bookstore too as the contents inside were essential readings for my module.

Overall expenses had actually exceeded my monthly allowance (terrible money management). Hopefully there would not be anymore unforeseen expenses in the following months.

Here are my expenses for March 2017:

Category $
Eating Out 142.7
Hobby 115.25
Transport 30.90
Groceries 26.63
Clothes 8

Monthly Expenses and POSB Invest Saver update (February 2017)

Hello readers! February had been hectic for me as I was preparing for my preliminary exams. There were days where I had forgotten to track my expenses. I have used estimates for days I missed out on tracking, so the figures for this month may not be as accurate.

Previously in January, I was using the app Expense Manager to track my expenses, but it was a hassle since there was no overview of how much I had spent for the month. I have switched to Monefy in February, and it was much better with an overview and options to add different expense categories.

Here are my expenses for February 2017:

Category $
Eating out -71.4
Transport -22.78
Groceries -20.52

POSB Invest Saver monthly and Portfolio update (December 2016), along with self-reflections

Hello, readers! 2016 is coming to a close, and while the year hadn’t been too fortunate for me overall, I am glad to have made it out stronger as I reviewed my life priorities.

Learning musical instruments was one of my more costly hobbies, with me taking up the violin back in secondary school. Fees for the violin lessons were shared between me and my parents, as they wanted me to take initiative and responsibility for my learning process. Along with the freedom I was granted, I am grateful to my parents for allowing me to take charge of my life from an adolescent age.

This might seem fickle-minded to some, but during this year, I have decided to learn the piano. Definitely not an ideal decision considering how I am still a full-time student. Though I weighed the cost against the time available I have (as a student vs working adult), I eventually concluded there was no better time than now to pursue my interests/hobbies.

In light of the above decision, I have purchased a digital piano to aid in my learning. My upcoming part-time job in January would not be able to cover the purchase cost, thus I have stopped my $100 RSP into Nikko AM STI ETF (G3B.SI) temporarily. Sitting on the sidelines to watch how the events in the financial world unfold in 2017 might not be such a bad idea.

POSB Invest Saver monthly and Portfolio update (October & November 2016)

Hello, readers! As my apartment was undergoing House Improvement Program back in end Oct, I was not able to update my October transactions. That’s that, so I had decided to update the data for October & Novemeber into this one post instead.

The interest rate hike by the Fed had been delayed several times, and many had expected to arrive in December, which thus explained the big drop in the purchase price for A35. Though my average price is currently higher than the market price, I look forward to averaging down for this counter.

Here are the transactions for October & November 2016:

POSB Invest Saver monthly and Portfolio update (September 2016)

Hello, readers! As I just settled back into my new school semester, I apologised for the belated update. G3B.SI has been on a downtrend since i started purchasing back in July 2016, but averaging down to reduce the average price is not a bad thing.

POSB Invest Saver monthly and Portfolio update (August 2016)

Slightly late, but I am back with my monthly update for August 2016! The price of A35 has been edging up for the past few months, nearing its 52 weeks high now. As much as I am tempted to sell and take profits, letting the amount to snowball has more upsides.

Here are the transactions for August 2016:

(Overdue) Life updates part 1 – Carrying habits over from one life to another

I wrote the below draft on my smartphone’s note app while passing time in the office. It’s my first attempt of writing something personal, so hope you enjoy this narrative journal post! (Hadn’t been writing since my last post, so it might feel rusty.)

Sometime in mid-June, my employment status had changed from “Student” to “Employed”.

Though designated as a temp staff, I wasn’t elated on taking additional responsibilities, nor receiving salary in my bank account. The latter spelled trouble like the former did. It might seemed puzzling, but how would you have reacted to an increase in spending power?

Despite being bent on saving my NS allowances to pay off my university fees, the plan had fell apart as binge-shopping ensued, blowing whatever amount I had received.

The guilt conscience from then had molded my frugality to date. What mattered more however, like how I did in my polytechnic life, was having the mindset of spending and saving like a student, and cultivating that habit.

While the absolute values are pint-sized compared to permanent employees, I am investing 13.3% and saving 45.9% (not counting CPF) of my current income. The percentages aren’t stellar, but they would make a great benchmark to compare to, when I step into full-time work.

How are you allocating income to different items?
